The ice road between Yellowknife and Dettah is to open for the 2019 season at 11am on Friday, January 11.

The road ordinarily remains open until some time in mid-April. January 11 is reportedly the latest date at which the road has been operational since the year 2000.

Initially, the road will be open only for vehicles weighing up to 5,000 kg.

The Department of Infrastructure said on Thursday the ice had now reached the required minimum thickness of 35 cm across all areas measured.
