Two weeks into a truce, union holds new strike training
The Union of Northern Workers is to hold strike training on Wednesday evening, according to an advisory issued this week.
A brief note addressed to all UNW members states strike training will take place at the union’s headquarters, beginning at 6pm.
The session comes two weeks after the union called off strike action against both the territorial government and power corporation.
A deal between the NWT government and the UNW saw strike plans abandoned in order to proceed to binding arbitration, with mediator Vince Ready set to issue a decision – which both sides must accept – in the next two weeks.
However, the power corporation strike was called off with no such cast-iron agreement in place.
At the time, the union said calling off the NTPC strike was a “difficult decision [but] the best course of action to take at this point in time to ensure the best possible outcome for all NTPC members.”
The union did not immediately respond to a request for clarification regarding the purpose of Wednesday’s training.
As part of their deal regarding binding arbitration, the union and territorial government have announced they are operating under a media blackout until Ready announces his decision.
