Video shows moment Inuvik building exploded

A still from a video showing a blast at a warehouse in Inuvik in March 2019

Video seen by Cabin Radio captures the explosion at an Inuvik warehouse from which two people escaped unharmed.

The footage shows the explosion ripping apart three of the building’s walls and its roof in a split second.

Two workers were welding a fuel tank when it exploded. Both walked away from the incident without a scratch, despite the apparent ferocity of the blast and its evident impact on the warehouse’s structural integrity.

Cabin Radio understands one of the two was able to make their way out of the building despite being thrown against a wall during the incident, which took place on the afternoon of March 12 at an industrial building owned by Bob’s Welding.

Last week, the company said the explosion was under investigation and was the first such incident to happen at the firm.

The employees went to the town’s hospital, where they were checked over and cleared to work.

RCMP later said there was no evidence of any criminality at the scene. The investigation is now being led by the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission.
