RCMP said a “serious incident” took place in Behchokǫ̀ on Monday afternoon, but few confirmed details were immediately available.
Several residents of the community shared images of a significant police operation shortly after 2pm on Monday.
“There’s like a SWAT team in Rae,” one onlooker told Cabin Radio.
Police said there was “no indication of a public safety concern” as of 4:15pm on Monday, though reports were widespread in the community of both a knife attack and people armed with guns – neither of which could be immediately confirmed, and police had not commented by 8:10pm.

One resident described themselves as “on lockdown” shortly after 5pm, saying RCMP officers had gone door-to-door advising people to remain inside.
The resident identified the area in question as a section of housing adjacent to the community’s sportsplex.
Another individual described the lockdown lifting at 5:50pm, allowing school students to at last return home.
More police vehicles were said by witnesses to be travelling from Yellowknife to the community at 7pm.

Witnesses reported at least one casualty. The nature of the incident and the condition of those involved was not confirmed by police.
“Supporting units are in transit to Behchokǫ̀ to assess the situation,” read an RCMP statement.
“We do not have confirmed details of the incident, with no indication of a public safety concern at this time.
“Updates will be provided as information becomes available.”
