RCMP in Yellowknife are warning the public of a “possible suspicious person and red van.”

On Friday evening, police said they were investigating a report of a man approaching a 14-year-old girl while he was driving and asking her to get inside his vehicle.

The girl “was able to walk to safety,” police said.

Police said the incident happened in “the area near St Joseph’s Park, westbound on Finlayson Drive [North] between Range Lake Road and Dagenais Drive.”

“A male, driving what is believed to be a red van, allegedly approached the youth and offered her a ride home and get into the vehicle,” police said in a statement.

“The male driver is described as having ‘tanned’ skin, black hair, and estimated to be in his 40s. The vehicle is described as a type of minivan, red in colour, with double sliding doors.”

If you were in the area between 12pm and 1pm and saw any van or person matching this description, or any suspicious activity, RCMP ask you to get in touch.

You can reach Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 1-800-222-TIPS.

“Yellowknife RCMP will be conducting additional patrols in the area to ensure public safety,” police said.

“The RCMP reminds parents and caregivers to be thorough in educating children in their care with regards to the dangers of speaking to strangers and to immediately report suspicious activity.”
