Northland Utilities, Yellowknife’s power distributor, plans a three-hour outage across Old Town and Ndilo in the early hours of Friday, April 26, 2019.

The outage is due to take place from 3:30am until 6:30am.

A graphic produced by the utility company suggested the outage would affect Pilots Lane, a section of Boffa Drive, and all areas north of that point – including Yellowknife’s Latham Island properties and the community of Ndilo.

“We will work diligently to restore power as soon as possible,” Northland Utilities said on Twitter.

(The tweet was noteworthy for appearing to be the company’s first using its @NorthlandUtil account, despite joining Twitter in 2013. A similar post to Facebook was the company’s first in 18 months. Both accounts are linked from the company’s homepage.)

Customers with questions are advised to call 867-873-4865.

No other areas of the city are expected to be affected by the planned outage.

As of noon on Thursday, Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast temperatures for the city of around -10C for the period between 3:30am and 6:30am on Friday.

While the NWT Power Corporation generates power across the territory, in Yellowknife that energy is distributed by Northland, which is an entirely separate (and often rival) company.
