Body found in lake north of Norman Wells is identified
A body found in a lake north of Norman Wells has reportedly been identified as that of missing 20-year-old Darren Whiteman.
In late May, police announced a body had been found “floating in Lennie Lake” – which lies 35 km north of the Sahtu community.
Police and the territory’s coroner service retrieved the body. On Wednesday, NNSL reported the NWT coroner’s office had confirmed the body as that of Whiteman, reported missing more than half a year ago.
Whiteman was last seen at a cabin on the lake on September 11, 2018.
Police led what they termed a “large scale multi-day search” by land, air, and boat after his absence was reported.
Local search and rescue volunteers were joined by helpers from outside the community, RCMP officers, a police dog team, and a range of other community agencies in an unsuccessful bid to find him.
