Simone Gessler will step up to become the new superintendent of Yellowknife Catholic Schools from August, the school board announced on Tuesday.

Gessler, currently the assistant superintendent, has been with Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS) since 1998.

She is to replace outgoing superintendent Claudia Parker.

Gessler “has taken on many roles … and has worked in a leadership capacity both at the school and district level for the past 17 years,” the school board said in a short statement.

“We look forward to working with Ms Gessler in her new capacity.”

The switch will take place on August 1.

Parker, who has been with YCS for 33 years, was inducted into the NWT Education Hall of Fame earlier this month.

During her induction she was acknowledged for her work in chairing the territory’s curriculum implementation committee and helping to create the school district’s student leadership initiative for Indigenous youth.

“Claudia has always listened and asked the important and sometimes difficult questions,” said the territorial government at the time.
