RCMP charge 20-year-old over YK convenience store robberies

Yellowknife police have charged a 20-year-old over two alleged armed robberies at the city’s Circle K (formerly Mac’s) convenience store.

Joanasie Qumuaqtuq faces two counts each of robbery, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes, failing to comply with a probation order, and disguise with the intent to commit an offence.

The first robbery happened on January 14 at around 4:30am. A man wielding a knife was said to have demanded the store clerk give him cash.

Six months later, an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes was taking after a man again threatened the clerk with a knife. This second robbery took place on June 7 at around midnight.

Qumuaqtuq remains in custody and will appear in court on June 25.
