Police say two people died in Monday’s collision involving a semi trailer and a sedan on Highway 3 between Yellowknife and Behchokǫ̀.

A semi trailer heading toward Yellowknife collided with a sedan travelling in the opposite direction at around 9am on Monday, police said in a news release on Tuesday morning.

The highway was closed for four hours as a result of the incident, which took place around 25 km east of Behchokǫ̀ and 70 km west of Yellowknife.

Police did not publicly identify the deceased but said they were a 47-year-old man and 47-year-old woman.

The driver of the semi trailer was not injured, RCMP said.

Firefighters and medical crews reached the scene to find the man and woman already dead. The highway closure allowed an RCMP collision analyst to work at the scene, determining what took place.

“The investigation into this motor vehicle collision is ongoing. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor,” RCMP said on Tuesday.
