NWT Fire says the wildfire burning between Fort Simpson and Jean Marie River “moved away” from each of the Dehcho communities on Wednesday.
Fire FS014’s proximity to Jean Marie River remains a concern – and the community’s evacuation alert is still in place – but the fire is still 14 km away, as it was on Tuesday.
Hot, dry weather has driven extreme fire activity in the Dehcho over the past few days, but there’s a chance of some rain over the next few days in the vicinity of both Jean Marie River and Fort Simpson.
NWT Fire said the village of Fort Simpson isn’t currently threatened by FS014 and crews don’t think there’s a threat to the ferry landing or highway, either, which are closer to the fire’s western edge.
“Today’s winds pushed the fires toward the Mackenzie River and away from the communities. Throughout the rest of the week, winds are not expected to push fire towards Fort Simpson,” NWT Fire stated.
