Mom against daughter in Yellowknife’s Habs alumni game

Jen Walden takes a shot against her daughter, Sadee, during the Habs alumni game in Yellowknife

Winning a place to play for the Montreal Canadiens alumni team when they came to Yellowknife had special meaning for Jen Walden.

As a child, she was told she couldn’t play hockey as she was a girl. “My mother decided that was nonsense and signed me up to play anyway as a boy,” she told Cabin Radio.

“I played for five years, dressing up at home so nobody knew.”

Now, Jen – a well-known northern artist – coaches minor hockey and plays regularly herself.

She said: “As a coach for these young girls, to have come from when I was their age being told you can’t play because you’re a girl, and now go on the ice and skate with the Habs with these little girls, is important for me. And for them, to set an example.”
