Youth in Fort Liard and Nahanni Butte have been helping Elders in their communities throughout the month of March.
The Help an Elder initiative kicked off on March 1 and sees young residents helping Elders in “respectful and meaningful ways” through acts like chopping and stacking wood, shovelling snow, and picking up groceries, RCMP said in a Friday news release.
As part of the initiative, youth have met with RCMP members and Fort Liard’s fire and emergency services on Wednesday nights to perform tasks.
During those nights, youth chopped enough wood for eight Elders in Fort Liard and delivered 300 muffins to Elders throughout the hamlet.
Youth who decide to participate in the program will have their name entered into a draw for prizes at the end of the month.
The program runs until March 28.
