Officials say an apartment fire in downtown Yellowknife early on Saturday morning was “not suspicious in nature.”
A 55-year-old woman died in the incident and another occupant was treated for smoke inhalation.
All units at the Aurora Suites building on 46th Street were evacuated for a number of days, though only one unit was affected.
“A post-mortem autopsy has been completed. At this point, there is nothing to indicate suspicious activity in the event,” read a City of Yellowknife statement issued on Thursday.
Authorities said an investigation at the scene of the fire has now finished. The incident is unusual in that no call was placed to emergency services (who were notified of a potential problem by an alarm company), very few signs of a fire were observed, no structural damage has been reported, and the scene was sealed off for several days.
The identity of the victim has not been released, nor their precise cause of death.
