Police have confirmed a man died in a road accident outside Fort Smith on Sunday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, RCMP say the accident – which appeared to involve only one vehicle – happened late on Sunday morning.
The driver, who has been identified by family as Fort Smith resident TJ Camsell, died at the scene. Three others, a man and two women, were seriously injured. All four were from the Northwest Territories.
Posting on Facebook, relative Edith Bourke identified Camsell as the victim and said: “We were heartbroken to hear of his passing. We will forever cherish our times together and have him in our hearts.”
Camsell’s sister, Patricia, also identified her brother as the driver through her Facebook page. The identity of the driver was not independently confirmed by RCMP or the NWT coroner’s office.
Police had no update on the condition of the three injured passengers, and were not immediately able to offer an account of what had happened to the vehicle.
“It appears this was a single motor vehicle accident. RCMP members are working with the Office of the Chief Coroner of the Northwest Territories as the investigation continues,” read the police statement.
