Fire crews were called out to an abandoned downtown Yellowknife building late on Tuesday evening.

Crews from two fire trucks appeared to be responding to a reported fire at the former office of Diamond Cabs, located at 5117 51 Street. Firefighters were summoned to the location at 10:30pm.

Witnesses told Cabin Radio they were unable to see any fire but could detect smoke coming from the area of the building, which has not been occupied for some time.

51 Street between 51 Avenue and 52 Avenue was closed off as fire crews reached the scene.

It’s not immediately clear how large any fire was, how much damage any buildings on the street sustained, or whether anyone was injured in the incident. Cabin Radio has approached the City of Yellowknife for more information.

The building is the second abandoned central Yellowknife structure to require the attention of firefighters in the space of two months.

In early June, a boarded-up downtown Yellowknife house on the corner of Franklin Avenue and 53 Street was gutted by fire in similar circumstances – at night, and during fairly heavy rain.

No further information has yet been provided regarding the cause of that June fire.
