Bear sightings in Yellowknife and Hay River

Bears have been sighted within both Yellowknife and Hay River this week, with at least one reportedly destroyed.

Yellowknife resident Ashley Geraghty shared a photo of a black bear in the city’s Kam Lake area late on Thursday, describing the bear as “big [and] very aggressive.”

According to Geraghty, a mother and baby were seen heading toward FInlayson Drive. Geraghty told Cabin Radio RCMP were on the scene at the time.

Meanwhile, the Town of Hay River said there had been “a lot of bear sightings within town limits over the last few days” in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The CBC reported one bear had been destroyed by wildlife officers, with one resident blaming fish waste from local people fishing for attracting the animals into the community.
