Northwestel says Yellowknife customers should expect disruption to services in the early hours of Friday.

In a news release on Thursday, the company said planned system maintenance beginning at 2am on Friday would mean “a temporary disruption of up to 30 minutes” to cable internet and cable home phone services in the city.

“Local mobility service should not be impacted by this maintenance,” the statement read.

“Emergency services in the area have been notified. Work is being performed during overnight hours to minimize the impact to our customers.

“Northwestel appreciates your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Alternative activities for Yellowknifers awake at 2am include:

  • actually going out to look at the Northern Lights rather than just reading other people’s tweets about them;
  • going fishing in the dark (lie on your back and count the stars where the cool grass grows); and
  • listening wistfully to pre-downloaded podcasts from the Subarctic Sex Show.
