SUMMARY:NWTACI Akaitcho Hall Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The NWT Art Centre Initiative (NWTACI) invites all community members and territorial media to a ceremony to bless the Land at the former location of Akaitcho Hall before starting intrusive pre-construction work on the site.\n“We look forward to gathering in ceremony and community to bless the Land and honour the past history of the site. This is an important first step in our work towards building a new public art gallery in the coming years.” – Toby Kruger, NWT Art Centre Initiative Board Chair\nOperating from 1958 to 1994, Akaitcho Hall was a residence for youth from across the North who attended the neighbouring Sir John Franklin School. It was run by the Federal government until 1969 when it was transferred to the Territorial government. Akaitcho Hall was one of the last residential schools in Canada to close in 1996. The building was demolished in 2007 and the site has been vacant since.\nRecently, the GNWT and the NWT Art Centre Initiative signed an MOU to allow for pre-construction work to take place on the site. Based on the guidance of former students and community members who attended gatherings about Akaitcho Hall in June 2025, the first step needed is to bless the Land.\n“Many of us former students are supportive of the plan to build an art gallery at the Akaitcho Hall site. This is a good opportunity to remember the past and look forward to the future. “ – Bob Overvold, former resident of Akaitcho Hall\nCommunity members can gather in-person at the former location of Akaitcho Hall (empty lot next to École Sir John Franklin High School) on October 1, 2026, from 1:00-3:00pm. This will be an outdoor ceremony, and no parking will be available on site. On-site wellness support will be available.\n
