Yellowknife's sunny Saturday evening was interrupted by a giant, looming storm cloud that appeared to have come from forest fires to the south.
A large wildfire burning 40 kilometres south of Sambaa K'e is sending heavy smoke toward the community. Crews are working on sprinklers and fire breaks.
Canadian North says its flights between Yellowknife and Hay River will take pets in the cabin free of charge to help evacuees and their animals get home.
The NWT Association of Communities says its annual general meeting, scheduled for Hay River in two weeks' time, will be postponed until February or March 2024.
The City of Yellowknife ended its ban on open-air fires within the municipal boundary, but said the ban could return at any time if conditions worsen.
