One of the coldest and longest winter endurance events in Yellowknife just got even longer.

The Yellowknife Multisport Club will host a Frostbite 55 race on March 23 – adding an extra five kilometres to its annual Frostbite 50 ski and snowshoe race.

The Frostbite 55 course will begin and end at the Yellowknife Ski Club. The trail will see racers follow Yellowknife Bay to the mouth of the Yellowknife River, head to and from Walsh Lake, travel through Hay Lake and Duck Lake, around Dettah, through Houseboat Bay and around Ndılǫ back to the ski club.

Checkpoints will take place at the Yellowknife River gravel quarry 10 km in, at the start of the Dettah Road 25 km in, and in Dettah at 40 km in.

This year, the race will be divided into four legs. Athletes can chose to either compete solo or in teams of two to four people.

Previously, the shorter course was divided into five legs and teams could have up to five participants competing in a relay.

People can register for Frostbite 55 on the Frostbite 50 website up until March 18 at midnight at “last-minute bird” pricing.

To get a better deal on registration fees, athletes can also register from now until February 29 at midnight to receive early bird pricing, or between March 1 and 15 for “regular bird” pricing.

The multisport club said it is also looking for volunteers to help in the lead up to the event and on race day including snowmobile riders, checkpoint managers, chalet volunteers and preparation volunteers. Anyone interested in volunteering can reach out to the race coordinators at ykfrostbite50@gmail.com.
