The Town of Inuvik says technical problems with water meters resulted in discrepancies that “doubled up” bills for some residents.

According to a notice issued on Tuesday afternoon, the town will replace old meters with new equipment this year.

“All water meters within town boundaries will be replaced, and precise and backdated readings will be completed for all customer accounts. As a result, adjustments will be made ,” the notice read.

Shortly afterward, the town posted an update that explained the issue involved bills for the months of November and December last year, and adjustments will be credited to affected accounts.

Inuvik’s senior administrator, Michael Trabysh, said the town was aware of a number of affected accounts and in the process of making corrections.

“The discrepancy occurred over November and December 2023, resulting in November doubling up on December’s billing,” Trabysh said in an email.

“In fact, town council has approved funding in 2024 to replace our ageing meter billing system with the latest technology.”

The town urges account holders to check their utility bills for December, which will “reflect higher consumption to make up for the November error.”
