Norman Wells ‘anticipates a lot of use’ for new gathering space

The Town of Norman Wells is planning to build a new gathering space that could become a centre for recreation activities closer to downtown.

In a Tuesday announcement, the town said it had partnered with Imperial Oil to build an area close to the Arctic Energy Alliance building that will boast facilities like a skate park, pump track, stage, fire pit and seats.

“This centrally located space is designed to be the heart of our community, easily accessible and connected to the walking paths. It’s the perfect spot to host community events and gatherings, bringing us all together in a relaxing, welcoming environment,” the town wrote online.

Mayor Frank Pope said the location formerly hosted an oil pumpjack decommissioned by Imperial Oil many years ago. Thereafter, the site was cleared and an environmental assessment followed.

“The town took over the site and decided it was a good place for a small downtown park or gathering space,” Pope told Cabin Radio, adding Imperial Oil had provided $50,000 for the project.

“It will hopefully have a gazebo, fire pit, playground equipment, skateboard site and other things to fit the small place – maybe a portable bandstand,” he said.

“Most recreational park activities such as this are farther out from the downtown core. This is close to the busy area of town. I anticipate a lot of use.”
