Incumbent Ken Kyikavichik and Frederick Blake Jr are running for grand chief at next month’s annual Gwich’in assembly at Aklavik’s Moose Kerr School.

The assembly happens each year in one of the four Gwich’in settlement communities of Fort McPherson, Tsiigehtchic, Aklavik or Inuvik.

The Gwich’in Tribal Council announced the candidates for grand chief on its election website on Monday. Voting will commence on August 1 and eligible participants have until August 9 to cast a vote electronically.

Poling stations will also be open on election day, August 19, for in-person voting.

In February, while explaining his decision to move to Edmonton for “personal and practical reasons,” Kyikavichik had confirmed he intended to seek re-election.

Blake represented the Mackenzie Delta district in the territorial legislature from 2011 to 2023.
