Tsiigehtchic’s fire chief has implemented a fire ban for the hamlet.

According to a notice from the hamlet’s acting senior administrative officer, the fire ban was put in place on Thursday due to expected high temperatures in the area. She said the ban would be lifted once the hamlet is advised to do so by the community’s fire chief.

According to NWT Fire, the fire danger is expected to be extreme in Tsiigehtchic on Friday and moderate over the weekend.

There are currently also regional fire bans in place across the South Slave, Dehcho and North Slave.

Those bans restrict people from:

  • starting, tending or using open fire outdoors, including in an open fire pit or burn barrel;
  • discharging firearms with incendiary or tracer ammunition;
  • shooting or detonating exploding targets;
  • shooting fireworks;
  • igniting sky lanterns;
  • igniting signal flare devices or pyrotechnic bear bangers unless in an emergency; and
  • storing flare devices, bear bangers or fireworks in a way that may cause them to be ignited.
