A new music festival is aiming to “celebrate the diverse community of Yellowknife in the deep dark of winter.”
The Still Dark Festival is the brainchild of Taylor Shephard and Brian Weadick, respectively the festival’s artistic and administrative directors, who have worked together at the Snowkings’ Winter Festival and Folk on the Rocks.
“By activating Yellowknife’s arts and culture scene during the long winter, we hope to strengthen the arts sector, support and activate the downtown during a challenging time of year, provide a value-added experience for visitors and, most importantly, follow the northern tradition of making our own fun to help each other survive the long dark winters,” a press release states.
The Still Dark Society, a voluntary non-profit board of directors, will “act as a guiding light” for the new event.
The inaugural Still Dark Festival will take place from January 31 to February 2, 2025, in downtown Yellowknife.
It will feature three to four large concerts and two to three smaller all-ages concerts alongside workshops and events, the press release states.
To kick off the festival announcement, The Still Dark Society is holding an It’s Getting Dark Bowling Dance Party fundraiser.
Taking place on Saturday, October 5 at the Kingpin Bowling Centre, the event will feature performances by Waivestate, DJ Harry, Puppy DJ and Seb. Tickets are $60 and are available online.
