Representatives from York University and the University of Toronto will be in Yellowknife this week to speak with migrant workers in the city for a research project.
A multi-year federally funded project – named International Mobility Programs in Settler-Colonial Contexts – is examining policy gaps and studying the experiences of migrant workers, as well as people who support them in Canada.
Rajdeep Sidhu, a research assistant from York University, said Yellowknife is one location in which the team is exploring case studies. Leah Vosko and Kiran Mirchandani, principal investigators from York University and the University of Toronto respectively, are visiting the city this week.
The team will hold a community dinner on Friday at a location in downtown Yellowknife. Organizers say people interested in attending should RSVP by email for details.
At the dinner, the researchers will explain more about the project, Sidhu said, including “how the community can help bring their knowledge and how we, as researchers, can analyze that information and then put it into academic journals or books.”
It’s a chance for people to “sit and talk to each other, connect and share their stories,” Sidhu said.
During their visit, the researchers will also meet with migration-related organizations in the city like Collège Nordique Francophone and CDÉTNO.

Correction: October 16, 2024 – 10:16 MT. This article initially stated the dinner is on Wednesday. We misunderstood. The researchers arrive on Wednesday but the dinner actually takes place on Friday. The article has been updated to reflect this and we apologize if we messed up your dinner plans.
