A group of Yellowknife residents is planning a traditional dance in the city’s downtown to celebrate an annual Hindu festival.

Navratri spans nine days and usually takes place in September or October, based on the lunar calendar. This year, the festival began on October 3 and will conclude with Dussehra on Saturday.

Diwali follows 20 days after Dussehra. Last November, a Diwali gala was organized at the multiplex to bring the city’s South Asian community together.

The word Navratri translates to “nine nights.” A typical celebration starts with a Puja, or prayer, in honour of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. During this time, people customarily perform a kind of Indian folk dance called garba.

This year’s Yellowknife garba will happen at Northern United Place on October 12 from 6-10pm, with help from sponsors Molly Maid and ECEN Immigration.

“It is a time of devotion, dance, and festivities, dedicated to the divine feminine energy that protects, nurtures, and empowers us all,” a description of the event stated.

Organizers say more than 100 people had registered for the event as of Thursday.
