Aurora College has received $1.5 million in grant funding over five years for its applied research programs.
According to a Thursday press release, Aurora College said it plans to use the grant funding – administered by the Natural Sciences Engineering and Research Council, a federal research agency – to develop new projects and improve existing ones.
The cash will also help to offer students experiential learning opportunities, hire additional research staff, and cover some indirect research costs.
The college said the funding will help to ensure research initiatives reflect regional priorities as well as build Indigenous capacity and sustainable development.
“This grant will not only support cutting-edge applied research but also help develop a skilled workforce that will drive innovation and sustainable development across the North,” Aurora College vice-president of research Chris Paci said in a statement.
The college’s president, Angela James, said the addition investments would prepare students “to contribute meaningfully to the region’s economic transformation.”
The college said new opportunities for students will include annual awards and paid research opportunities beginning in the 2025-26 academic year.
Grant money will also be used to establish a partner development fund and a knowledge mobilization fund to further collaborative research with northern and Indigenous organizations.
