RCMP in Inuvik say they have charged three men from Edmonton with drug trafficking offences following a traffic stop.

According to a Tuesday press release, officers conducted the traffic stop on January 25, acting on a tip from the public.

RCMP said they located three men from Edmonton inside the vehicle, including Gasser Mahmoud, 30, who was on bail conditions to not be in the NWT.

While arresting Mahmoud, police said they found suspected cocaine and weapons including a baton and a machete. After obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle, officers said they recovered additional evidence.

RCMP said they seized a total of 97 grams of suspected cocaine and $3,320 in cash.

RCMP have charged Mahmoud with possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and seven counts of failing to comply with bail conditions. They also charged Mohanad Hasan, 26, with trafficking cocaine, possessing the proceeds of crime and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and charged Jamal Abdullah-Galago, 30, with possessing a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Police said all three men are in custody pending future court dates.

“This incident highlights the important role that the public plays in reporting suspicious drug activity within the community,” stated Sgt Jesse Aubin, Inuvik detachment commander.
