The RCMP has released the results of an annual contest to select names for its police service dogs.

More than 10,000 online submissions were received from children across Canada aged four to 14. This year, all names for the first 13 German shepherds born at the Police Dog Services Training Centre in Alberta had to start with the letter A.

NWT resident Nora Boken’s suggestion, August, was chosen as one of the winning entries. Ace, Argo, Arctic, Anouk, Action, Agent, Atim, Ash, Anchor, Alfie, Adler and Addy are the other winners.

All winners are expected to receive a photo of the puppy they named, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle.

Previous winners from the territory include Lexia Laviolette and Edie Venne, who suggested the names Scout and Tilly respectively.
