Benji Straker says he wrote Despite the Distance during a period of deep reflection on fatherhood, “reminiscing about my two little girls, watching them grow and feeling that bittersweet pull between the past and the future.”

“As parents, we all question if we’re doing enough,” he said, “but this song is my way of holding on to the moments that matter most.”

Straker, who performs as Hughes, originally released the song as a single last year but re-recorded it for inclusion in the band’s upcoming album.

Despite the Distance is the first single from Hughes’ self-titled record, set to be released on July 11.

The album is described as “blending folk storytelling with blues-rock grit and layered instrumentation” and weaving “introspective lyrics, ambient textures, and country-surf guitar into a sound both ethereal and grounded.”
