The Philippine Cultural Association of Yellowknife (PCAY) hosted its first-ever Kalaayan Festival on June 14 to celebrate the Philippines’ 127th Independence Day.
“In the past, we usually marked this special day with a flag raising at the City of Yellowknife plaza and small, intimate gatherings. This year, we took a big step forward with a free, public festival that brought together over 300 attendees from all backgrounds,” wrote Kate Sharney Mendoza on behalf of PCAY.
The all-day festival at the Yellowknife Multiplex featured food vendors, some selling classic Filipino dishes.
Craft vendors also joined in the fun, like Tina Crowe Designs, who created special Filipino designs to sell at the festival, and will donate part of the proceeds to a Filipino organization or cause chosen by the PCAY.
The festival also featured educational booths, where people could learn a Filipino word or watch an educational video about Filipino culture. Guests collected stamps from each booth for an event passport.

Dancers and singers performed throughout the day and into the evening, celebrating Filipino culture and talent.
