Northwest Territories cross-country skiers Sharon Firth and the late Shirley Firth Larsson will be inducted into the Canada Games Hall of Honour this summer.
The Hall of Honour celebrates individuals who have left a lasting legacy in Canadian sports.
From Aklavik, the twin sisters represented Team NT at the 1971 and 1975 Canada Winter Games. Sharon subsequently raced for Alberta at the 1979 Canada Games.
The two, who were among the first female Indigenous athletes to represent Canada at the Olympic Games, competed at four consecutive Winter Olympics in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984. Shirley passed away in 2013.
They are among six inductees in Canada Games Hall of Honour for 2025, alongside Jennifer Bishop, Lennox Lewis, Diana Matheson and Ajay Patel.
This year’s induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 8 in St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome this group into the Canada Games Hall of Honour,” Kelly-Ann Paul, chief executive officer of the Canada Games Council, was quoted as saying.
“Their journeys are a testament to the foundational role the Canada Games play in developing Canada’s future leaders and champions, both in sport and in life. Each of them has not only achieved remarkable success but has also profoundly impacted their communities and inspired future generations.
“It is a true privilege to recognize their lasting legacy and contributions to the Canada Games movement.”
