The City of Yellowknife has opened submissions for residents to pitch what they would like to see in the municipality’s 2026 budget.
Residents can submit project proposals through an online form on the city’s website until August 15.
Projects residents suggested for the 2025 budget ranged from a new dog park to bike lanes and a new snow removal method.
City council agreed to commit $10,000 in the latest budget to trial bike lanes on some streets – a trial that began earlier this summer – and $45,000 to improve Yellowknife’s existing dog park.
The city asked that applicants submitting projects for the 2026 budget provide their contact information, estimated costs, a sense of with which council strategic priorities the project aligns, and proposed funding options.
The city noted it is legally required to have a balanced budget, meaning any proposals requiring additional funding will result in a tax increase or reductions to other services or programs.
Applicants who want to present their proposal to council at an August 25 council meeting may contact the city clerk by email or at 867-920-5602 by 10am on August 20 to be added to the agenda.
Whether proposals will make it into the final 2026 budget will ultimately be up to city council.
