While some NWT communities were dealing with wildfires and smoke on Saturday, Tuktoyaktuk experienced flooding.

According to the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs, or Maca, a high wind event caused some local flooding in the Beaufort Delta hamlet.

Several people in the community shared photos and videos on social media on Saturday showing strong waves and high water levels on the Arctic Ocean.

Maca said a few roads were washed out, telecommunications service was disrupted and there was damage to Tuktoyaktuk’s waterfront area including to two houses.

The NWT government said the extent of the damage is being assessed.

Winds calmed down Sunday morning, the department said, telecommunications service is restored and the community government is meeting Sunday afternoon.

In a Sunday afternoon update posted to Facebook, the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk said road construction and repairs would take place in the community over the next few days in the key areas of Ocean View Road, Tuktu Road, Ibyuk Crescent and Mangilaluk Loop.

It added that water and sewer service ways would also be cleared and that community clean up, garbage pickup areas would be posted.

A video submitted by Audrey Nasogaluak shows waves crashing on Tuktoyaktuk’s waterfront.

“As a community we will continue to work together in supporting and ensuring the safety of the community,” the post stated.
