Field Law has opened applications for its annual community fund, offering a total of $20,000 to NWT projects.

In a news release, Field Law said this year’s fund will mark a total of $1 million it has given to more than 165 community initiatives in Alberta and the NWT since it launched the program in 2013.

“Each year, we’re inspired by the passionate and dedicated individuals behind the applications we receive,” stated Farha Salim, managing partner at Field Law.

“Reaching the $1-million milestone through the Field law Community Fund Program is a powerful reminder of the impact local ideas can have. This program is about more than just funding – it’s about amplifying community voices and empowering them to shape their own futures.”

Projects that received funding in 2024 included the Yellowknife Gymnastics Club, which was awarded a grand prize of $6,000 for its Gymnastics For All program. The program offers free or subsidized gymnastics with adaptive equipment to children aged two to 16 years.

“This funding ensures every child, regardless of circumstances, can build confidence, resilience and physical and emotional wellbeing through inclusive gymnastics programming,” Field Law stated.

Expansion and revitalization of the Kimberlite Career and Technical Centre received $2,000 from last year’s fund as did an NWT wellness map and Indigenous wellness programs from Sweetgrass Healing Centre, which also won an employees’ choice award.

This year, $30,000 will be available to projects in each of northern and southern Alberta, $20,000 in the NWT and $5,000 as part of the Next Gen Award, which supports ideas from post-secondary students that benefit their campus or community.

Charitable organizations, non-profits and individuals based in Alberta and the NWT are eligible to apply.

Field Law encouraged previous winners to apply with new ideas to “build on the positive impact and momentum of the program.”

Applications for this year’s fund close at 5pm MT on October 8.

Finalists will be chosen through a combination of public voting and the decisions of a local community market judging panel.

Starting October 15, anyone living in Alberta or the NWT can vote for their favourite projects on the community fund program’s website.
