Happy holidays from Cabin Radio. Here’s when and where to celebrate over the festive season in the NWT.

Yellowknife, Ndılǫ and Dettah

The Community Fundraising Club is raising funds for its Adopt-a-Family program in Yellowknife.

December 25

Harleys Hardrock Saloon will be open on Christmas Day for people “looking for a place to have some holiday cheer,” owner Scott Yuill said, especially out-of-town workers.

The City of Yellowknife’s New Year’s Eve fireworks start at 8pm and can be watched from Somba K’e Civic Plaza. Visit the city’s website for a map of other safe viewing areas.

The Raven Pub is holding a New Year’s Eve countdown with DJ TMixxy from 10pm-3am. Bring a fresh pair of socks for the homeless to get in for free or it’s $10 at the door.

The Yellowknives Dene First Nation is holding a New Year’s Eve party featuring a talent show and jigging, singing and dancing contests starting at 8pm at the Chief Drygeese Centre in Dettah.

Harleys Hardrock Saloon will host a New Year’s Eve party with free admission, accepting donations for the SPCA and warm clothing for Yellowknifers without homes.


Behchokǫ̀

The Tłı̨chǫ Government is sharing one Taati Yatiì Christmas word a day throughout the month on its Facebook page.

A Christmas drum dance takes place at the cultural centre at 7pm.

A New Year’s Eve drum dance begins at 9pm at the cultural centre followed by a fireworks show at midnight.

January 1

A new year’s day drum dance begins at 5pm at the cultural centre followed by fireworks at 6pm.

January 2

A feeding of the fire ceremony and community feast begins at 3pm at the cultural centre.


Hay River

The Hay River Soup Kitchen is accepting donations for its wish list tree.

The deadline for entries for the town’s Christmas lights contest is Friday, December 19 at noon. Voting will then take place until Tuesday, December 30.


Fort Smith

The community and recreation centre is hosting a New Year’s Eve family party from 2-4pm in the gymnasium.

A fancy dress New Year’s Eve party starts at the community hall at 8pm with music, a photo booth, door prizes, games, fireworks and a money balloon drop.

Judging for a new year’s window decorating contest starts at 3pm.

A skidoo rally starts at noon at the Sittichinli Recreation Complex.
