The NWT Recreation and Parks Association has opened registration for its annual winter walking challenge, which will have a new school participation prize.

Walk to Tuk encourages teams to collectively walk 1,658 km, the equivalent of the distance from Fort Providence to Tuktoyaktuk, to stay active during the winter season.

“For years, Walk to Tuk has been woven into the NWT’s winter calendar,” stated Tim Van Dam, active communities director at the recreation association.

“As northerners, new or old, we face a winter season longer, darker, and colder than most. While some want to hunker down and wait it out in front of a phone or TV, Walk to Tuk is an activity that brings people together and gets them outside again.”

Teams can now register for the 2026 event on the Walk to Tuk website.

Participants will be able to log their walking time from January 1 to February 28, 2026.

Prizes, including for submitted photos and stories, will be awarded throughout the challenge.

A new school participation prize will be open to all participating NWT schools, while the grand prize will be open to any NWT resident who walks at least 1,658 km.

More than 2,800 people from 25 NWT communities participated in Walk to Tuk 2025.
