RCMP in Yellowknife say they have arrested and charged a man after he allegedly rammed police vehicles and assaulted officers while attempting to evade arrest.

According to a Monday news release, RCMP received reports early on Friday morning alleging that two people had been assaulted in Dettah and the suspect was in possession of a firearm and had fled the scene in a vehicle.

Officers said they subsequently located the vehicle and claim that while attempting to flee a traffic stop, the suspect became stuck in a ditch. While trying to drive out of the ditch, RCMP allege the suspect rammed two police vehicles before coming to a stop.

RCMP said the man then exited the vehicle and “engaged in an altercation with officers.”

Police said they arrested the man after successfully using a Taser on him.

No firearm was located and officers said the claim that the man was in possession of a firearm has not been substantiated.

In connection to the incident, RCMP have charged Louis Beaulieu, 39, with dangerous operation of a vehicle, impaired operation of a vehicle, failing to stop for a police officer, assault, resisting a peace officer, assaulting a police officer with intent to resist, assaulting a police officer with a weapon and mischief.

RCMP said Beaulieu appeared in court on the charges and has been remanded into custody.
