Two men believed to have been involved in the illicit drug trade have been arrested in Yellowknife and face weapons-related charges, RCMP say.
In a news release, police said officers responded on Thursday to a report of a person openly carrying a pistol and bear spray outside an apartment building.
RCMP said an imitation pistol was later recovered.
According to police, 39-year-old Dean McNeely of Yellowknife was charged with possession of a weapon contrary to a court order, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and carrying a concealed weapon. Police said he was previously prohibited from possessing firearms.
The charges have yet to be proven in court. McNeely is in custody after a bail hearing, police said.
RCMP added a second person was arrested and released on a promise to appear in court. That person is said by police to face charges of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
Police said they were not naming the second individual, a 40-year-old Yellowknife man, as the charges had yet to be formally sworn in court.
