See which NWT winter roads have closed for the season

As winter begins to wind down and spring emerges in the NWT, many of the territory’s winter roads are closing for the season.

The NWT government provides updated information on road conditions and closures on Drive NWT.

According to the GNWT, the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road is closed for the season including access roads to Délı̨nę and Colville Lake. The five-year average closing date for those roads is April 6.

The Sambaa K’e winter road is also closed. Its five-year average closing date is April 3.

The Diavik diamond mine says the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road has closed for the winter. Its five-year average closing date is March 30.

The winter roads to Gamètì and Wekweètì are restricted to night-time travel from 10pm to 10am. The five-year average closing dates for those roads is April 13.

The Community Government of Behchokǫ̀ said the Edzo-Rae ice road connection has closed.

Drivers are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution on the Aklavik access road. The five-year average closing date for the ice road is April 27.

Winter roads that are currently open and their five-year average closing dates include:

  • the Dettah ice road, April 13;
  • Nahanni Butte winter road, April 13;
  • Liard River ice crossing, April 18;
  • Mackenzie River ice crossing at Tsiigehtchic, May 6;
  • Mackenzie River ice crossing at Ndulee, April 16; and
  • Peel River ice crossing, May 9.
