A man has been sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a woman outside Stanton Territorial Hospital and robbing two stores in Yellowknife with a knife.
David Maniyogina, 46, admitted assaulting the woman in July 2023 then robbing the downtown Liquor Store and Circle K convenience store in February 2024.
Charges of resisting RCMP by refusing to leave a cell and uttering a threat to kill a Circle K clerk were withdrawn.
Last month, Judge Robert Gorin sentenced Maniyogina to a total of three years for the charges. Maniyogina was given credit of two years and 209 days for time served in pre-sentencing custody.
Once released from jail, Maniyogina will be on probation for a year and prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years.
According to an agreed statement of facts, on July 15, 2023, Maniyogina pushed a woman and dragged her by the hair outside the Yellowknife hospital and was subsequently arrested.
Shortly after 9:30pm on February 19, 2024, another woman reported to police that Maniyogina had attempted to steal two bottles of alcohol from the Liquor Store. When she and a security guard tried to stop Maniyogina, the woman said, he brandished a large kitchen knife.
Police tried to locate Maniyogina that evening but were unsuccessful.
The following morning around 4:30am, RCMP received a report that a man had robbed the Circle K convenience store with a knife. An officer reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and recognized Maniyogina.
The agreed facts state Maniyogina collected several items from the store before brandishing a three-inch knife at the clerk. The clerk said Maniyogina threatened to kill him if he did not open the till.
After the clerk opened the till, Maniyogina stole cash and a packet of cigarettes before leaving the store. He returned later to take more items from behind the counter.
In total, Maniyogina stole $80, six packs of cigarettes, three energy drinks, several candy bars and a frozen hamburger.
Around 8:30am, police were notified that Maniyogina was at the sobering centre, where officers then arrested him.
Court records indicate Maniyogina has been attending addictions treatment.
