In a letter posted to its Facebook page Tuesday, Yellowknife’s public school district said a public health order issued for Mildred Hall School because of high levels of lead in drinking water has been lifted.
In the letter issued to staff and families, the YK1 school district said six affected faucets at Mildred Hall were replaced, water filters were added to the replaced faucets, and all water fountains were updated with a similar filter system.
YK1 also said recent water tests had confirmed the safety of the water for consumption.
The school district said the school will continue to flush pipes daily before students and staff arrive as a preventative measure.
Mildred Hall was one of the first schools in the Northwest Territories to test positive for high lead levels after the GNWT began its territory-wide testing program of school water fixtures.
Forty-two NWT schools have been tested so far, and water testing is ongoing for the remainder. According to the territorial government’s website on drinking water testing, Łútsël K’é Dene School is next to be tested on May 6.
