James Marlowe and Stephanie Poole are running to be the next chief of the Łútsël K’é Dene First Nation.

Marlowe is the current chief of the First Nation.

He recently criticized the GNWT, questioning the sincerity of the premier’s apology to the Łútsël K’é Dene First Nation for a 2022 raid at a culture camp on Artillery Lake. He has also raised concerns about a lack of territorial support for the First Nation’s priorities.

On a website she created for the election, Poole said she has served two terms as a councillor on Łútsël K’é Dene First Nation council and has worked for the Akaitcho Interim Measures Agreement office for more than 16 years. She said she has served as the wellness coordinator for the Łútsël K’é Dene First Nation since March 2024.

The two candidates are expected to speak at a chief’s forum Wednesday night at the Zah Lockheart Community Hall at 5pm.
