The Town of Hay River has renamed a road and a campground after residents who have dedicated a portion of their lives to the community.

Fairway Drive will now be known as Hoffman Way, while the Hay River golf course campground will be known as the Vern Tordoff Memorial Campground.

The changes were made at the town’s February 1 council meeting.

Hoffman Way represents Gary Hoffman, who gave many years of service to the golf club and Nordic centre.

“Mr Hoffman is well recognized for his unparalleled community volunteerism that included significant contributions to the Hay River Curling Club, the Hay River Elks, and the Hay River Community Services Society (TV society),” council documents state.

Vern Tordoff, who is now the namesake of the golf course campground, was a town councillor from 1988 to 2005. Tordoff passed away in 2012 after a battle with cancer, NNSL reported.

“He dedicated much of his time to the community, especially to the Hay River Golf Course where he played a key role in securing funding, the construction of facility entrance signage, and in developing the campground,” council documents state.

Signage for the two areas is expected to be in place by the summer.

A third request, to rename Commercial Road to Grimsrud Road, is expected to come before council in the near future.

That change would recognize Roy Grimsrud for his service as a member of the Hay River Fire Department.
