Cabin Radio is a news organization and radio station in Yellowknife, owned and operated by 506992 NWT Ltd. This page explains, in plain language, what information we collect from you, what we do with it, and what we’ll never do with it.
The short version
We collect very little. If you read our website or listen to our stream, we see the same basic technical information almost every website sees – and that’s about it. If you email us, submit an event, enter a contest or sign up for something, we get whatever you chose to send us, and we use it only for the thing you sent it for.
We don’t sell your information. We don’t build profiles of you. We don’t share your details with advertisers.
What we collect
Information you give us. If you contact us, submit an event, send a news tip, enter a contest, apply for a job, or sign up for our newsletter, we receive whatever you provide – usually a name, an email address, and sometimes a phone number. We use it to do the thing you asked us to do, and nothing else. When you enter one of our contests, for example, we use your details to run that contest and reach you if you win – entering doesn’t add you to a mailing list or anything else.
Information collected automatically. Like almost every website, our servers and analytics tools – we use Jetpack and Google Analytics – record basic technical data when you visit: your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you looked at, and roughly where in the world you are (at a city level, based on your IP address – not precise GPS tracking). We use this to understand how many people are reading, which stories matter to you, and to keep the site secure and working. We look at this data in aggregate – “12,000 people read this article” – not to follow individuals around.
Cookies. We use a small number of cookies for analytics and to make the site function. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings and the site will still work.
What we don’t do
- We do not sell your personal information. We never have.
- We do not share your information with advertisers. Advertising on our site consists of banners sold directly by us to local organizations – there is no targeted-advertising network deciding what you see based on who you are.
- We do not collect sensitive personal information.
- We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Services run by other companies
Some things we offer are run on other companies’ platforms and, if you use them, their privacy policies apply alongside ours:
- Our newsletter is delivered through Substack.
- Donations are processed through the News Revenue Hub (cabin-radio.fundjournalism.org) and its payment provider, Stripe. Cabin Radio does not see or store your card details.
- Our store is hosted by Square. Payment details go to Square, not to us.
- Embedded content – like YouTube videos or social media posts inside our articles – comes from those platforms, which may set their own cookies when it loads.
We choose service providers that are contractually required to protect your data and use it only on our instructions. Links to other websites from our articles are just that – links – and we’re not responsible for what those sites do.
The Cabin Radio app
Our mobile app lets you listen to the stream and read our news. It collects the same kind of basic technical information as the website.
If you use the app to record and send us a message, it will ask for permission to use your device’s microphone. This permission is used only when you choose to record, and anything you record reaches us only if you choose to send it. Messages you send us may be played on air or published – that’s what they’re for – so don’t include anything in a recording you wouldn’t want broadcast.
News tips and sources
This policy covers your information as a reader, listener or contact – not our journalism. Information gathered for reporting is handled under our journalism ethics commitments and Canadian privacy law recognizes that journalistic work is treated differently. If you send us a news tip and ask for confidentiality, we take that seriously – talk to us about what protection you need before sharing anything sensitive.
How long we keep information and how we protect it
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose you gave it to us, or as long as the law requires (tax records, for example).
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect it, though no system on the internet can be guaranteed 100-percent secure.
Your rights
You can ask us, at any time, to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you;
- correct it if it’s wrong;
- delete it; or
- stop sending you emails (every newsletter also has an unsubscribe link).
Email us and we’ll act on your request in line with Canadian privacy law.
