Want a show on Cabin Radio? This is the place to start

Cabin Radio Studio One

Cabin Radio: by northern residents, for northern residents.

As we build our station and get ready to launch our live stream, we invite applications from residents of any northern community who are interested in hosting a show with us.

Evenings and most weekends in the Cabin Radio schedule are reserved for specialist programming: shows put together by community members with a passion they’d like to share, whether that’s music, a hobby, news, politics, interviews, or any aspect of life in the North.

We have studios in Yellowknife that are available for public use to create shows, and arrangements with several NWT community radio stations which provide access to local facilities for community residents. We also welcome applications from prospective hosts in other communities who have their own home-based studio equipment (such as a microphone, recording device, quiet room, and internet access).

Here’s how to pitch a show

We use this Google form to organize all the show pitches we receive. Please fill out the form as best you can (don’t worry if some parts are incomplete or you aren’t sure about something) and submit the form to us to begin the process of pitching a show.

Your ideas can be very specific and developed or they can be just a starting point. We are committed to working with you to make your show the best it can be, and we’ll happily help you turn a good idea into a great one.

(Note that we sometimes may not be able to accept every show pitch, and if that’s the case, we’ll be in touch to let you know.)

What happens next

Once a show pitch is accepted, we work with you to provide training time in our studio under the supervision of someone with professional broadcast experience. We want you to be confident that we’re with you each step of the way, making sure your show sounds as good as it can be.

Your show will be pre-recorded in Studio Two at Cabin Radio, then aired at a later date via our live stream. Some shows will also be available, either in whole or in part (music licensing restrictions apply), to listen again on-demand as podcasts.

Hosts who become comfortable in Studio Two’s pre-recorded environment will eventually be able to graduate to Studio One if they’d like to take their show live. However, not all shows call for this and many, many world-class radio shows are pre-taped in their entirety.

Questions?

Contact Ollie Williams, our head of programming, if you have any questions about hosting a show with Cabin Radio or would like more information.

Please note that Cabin Radio is currently staffed entirely by volunteers and is not able to pay show hosts – this is a volunteer opportunity. We completely understand if you’re not able to volunteer your time, and want to be sure that all applicants are happy to volunteer with us before spending too much energy on their show ideas and training! We are, however, working on financial models that will allow us to begin offering some form of payment to show hosts as soon as we can.
