Three people face drug trafficking charges, RCMP say, after an investigation into what police called “local dial-a-dope operations within Yellowknife.”

In a Monday news release, RCMP said the charges were the result of a “months-long investigation into drug trafficking” in the city.

The drugs alleged to have been trafficked were not specified.

According to police, the investigation focused on “drug traffickers providing cellular phone numbers to potential buyers and then arranging the sale of drugs at predetermined locations.”

RCMP allege that 40-year-old Michael Payne, 60-year-old Yusuf Hashi and 38-year-old Adolphus Lennie “were operating separate dial-a-dope phones.”

They are each charged with trafficking a controlled substance. Payne also faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possessing the proceeds of crime.

The charges have not yet been proven in court and the three are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“Drug trafficking within the Northwest Territories remains an ongoing threat to the safety of our communities,” RCMP stated.

“The Northwest Territories RCMP remain committed to reducing the supply of dangerous drugs in our communities and holding those who benefit from this predatory criminal activity accountable.”
