A winter storm is expected to strike Yellowknife and other communities around Great Slave Lake on Friday, bringing winds gusting to 70 km/h and snow.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said Yellowknife, the Tłı̨chǫ communities, Fort Resolution, Łútsël K’é, Fort Providence and Kakisa should all expect winter storm conditions.

“Strong wind gusts and snow will move into the area by Friday evening,” the federal agency stated in a Thursday afternoon advisory.

“Wind gusts near 70 km/h from the northwest will result in poor visibility in blowing snow, especially in exposed areas. Over larger lakes, the visibility may drop to near zero as blizzard conditions develop.

“The conditions will improve Saturday morning when the snowfall tapers off and the winds weaken.”

ECCC added that “clear, cold conditions will settle in for the rest of the weekend” with wind chill values approaching -40.

“Avoid travel if possible,” residents were told.
